How to Replace Windshield Wiper Blades: A Beginner’s Guide

Windshield wipers that leave streaks, skip across the glass or have damaged rubber can make it harder to see in rain. Replacing the blades is a manageable at-home task, but the correct size and connector depend on your vehicle.

A raised wiper arm is spring-loaded. Place a towel beneath it so it cannot strike the windshield if it slips.

Use your owner’s manual and the replacement-blade instructions as your guide. Wiper designs differ, so don’t force a part that won’t release or fit.

What You’ll Need

  • Replacement blades matched to your vehicle’s make, model and year
  • Your owner’s manual, or the blade maker’s fit guide
  • A soft towel to protect the windshield

Steps

  1. Park and switch off the vehicle. Put it on level ground, turn off the ignition and make sure the wipers are off. If the arms are tucked under the hood, check the owner’s manual for a service position that lets you raise them.
  2. Confirm the replacement sizes and connectors. Check the manual or a vehicle-specific fit guide. The driver- and passenger-side blades may be different lengths, and the attachment style can vary. Don’t assume a set of two matching blades is right for your car.
  3. Protect the windshield. Place a folded towel on the glass under the wiper arm. Raise the arm only if it moves freely and your vehicle allows it. The spring-loaded arm can snap back against the windshield if it slips.
  4. Remove the old blade. Find the release tab or latch where the blade joins the arm. Press or move it as directed by the blade instructions, then slide the blade off. Connector designs vary, so check the diagram rather than pulling hard.
  5. Attach the new blade. Use the adapter supplied with the blade if the instructions call for one. Slide or press the connector onto the arm until it locks as directed. Give the blade a gentle tug to check that it is secure.
  6. Lower the arm carefully and repeat. Guide the arm back onto the glass; don’t let it drop. Replace the other blade using its correct size, then remove the towel.
  7. Test the wipers. With the arms resting on the windshield, turn on the vehicle and use washer fluid to test them. Check that both blades move normally and clear the glass. If one catches, sits crooked or comes loose, switch the wipers off and recheck the fit before driving.

Tips and Things to Know

  • Don’t force a stuck arm or connector. Some vehicles require a special wiper position or have a different release method. Check the manual or ask a repair shop if you’re unsure.
  • Keep the rubber clean. Dirt on the windshield or blade can contribute to streaking. Clean the glass and blade gently, following the blade maker’s care instructions.
  • Replace based on condition. Split or damaged rubber, persistent streaks, or poor clearing after cleaning are reasons to inspect the blades and consider replacement. If new blades still perform badly, the issue may not be the blades alone.
  • Don’t run the wipers on a dry, dirty windshield. Use washer fluid when testing or clearing dust, and check that the blades are properly seated first.

Once you’ve matched the blades and confirmed the connectors are locked, the job is mostly careful handling. Take your time, follow the instructions for your specific vehicle and test the wipers before you need them in bad weather.
